Overview

Music Therapy is the process of helping individuals with specific disabilities or problems to accomplish behavioral goals that are not necessarily music related. Music becomes a "tool" rather than an end in itself.

At Community Music School, approximately two hundred clients are presently receiving Music Therapy services, either individually or in groups. Currently, sessions include clients having the following diagnosis: Developmental delay, Pervasive developmental disorder, Severely emotionally disturbed, Cancer, Cerebral palsy, Autism, Attention deficit disorder, and Physical impairments.

Outreach programs are offered by CMS to provide music therapy for individuals and groups throughout the community that either do not have access to the school building or to incorporate music therapy into an existing program.

Opportunities

How many opportunities exist in the musical world for special needs' youth and adults? CMS provides extensive in-house and outreach programming. Programs for groups, as well as individualized music therapy sessions at the school are ongoing.

Community Music School now provides more music therapy services than ever before and plans to expand the program to provide more outreach programs in the next few years. Music Therapy enhances Community Music School's ability to serve the entire community by offering appropriate programs to individuals with special needs and helps to fulfill our mission. Our therapist is board certified.

List of programs offered:

Boys and Girls Club of Allentown

CMS and the Club have joined forces to incorporate group music therapy services into an existing program for campers from the Club and from ARC. The forty to forty-five special needs' campers involved in the weekly programs enjoy nine weeks of singing, playing instruments, moving to music and creating their own songs. It is encouraging to see the campers assist each other as they explore the wonderful world of music.

The Girl's Club of Allentown

The young girls at the Club presently enjoy a one-hour per week Music Exploration Program. The program consists of the therapist introducing a variety of music from around the world as well as many styles of music from the United States. Three girls are chosen per semester to participate in a small group "Introduction to Piano" course. This program will be expanded to include two Music Exploration Groups per week in the future.

Daybreak

Daybreak is a drop-in day treatment facility for adults with mental health concerns, who now enjoy one hour of a Music Appreciation Class per week. The members participate in sing-a-longs, dancing, listening to a wide variety of music and playing a variety of rhythm instruments from around the world.
